Our Island Opportunity

Tasmania is an island economy of many strengths:

  • 100% of electricity is generated from renewables

  • 45% plus of our terrestrial area is protected

  • we have an abundance of clean water, fresh air, fertile soils

  • we have a passionate and vibrant community with 60,000 years of lived connection to our island home of lutruwita

The connectedness of our community coupled with the passion of Tasmanians means that when we come together to take action we are capable of enormous change. This is the heart of being Tasmanian. The Tasmanian Way brings Tasmanians and those who love Tasmania together to maintain what is wonderful, protect what makes us unique and urgently fix the complex challenges facing our state.

Tasmania is an island state in a larger developed economy. We are a laboratory of solutions and innovations to transition to a more sustainable and resilient future. We are small enough to manage but big enough to matter. Our island home at the edge of the world can be the leading edge of sustainability for the benefit of all Tasmanians and those who love Tasmania.

What is the Tasmanian Way

The Tasmanian Way as a platform to inspire a whole-of-Tasmania approach to transition to a true zero emissions and sustainable future for the health, wellbeing and prosperity of all Tasmanians. We do this by convening Tasmanians using community-led, place-based approaches to:

  • Cultivate sustainability leaders and champions.

  • Co-create solutions to the complex climate change and sustainability challenges facing our State.

  • Celebrate and inspire genuine leadership in the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Why it exists:

  • No singular entity has control of the entire system or all the answers and many want help in figuring out the best course of actions.

  • To accelerate positive change by celebrating what is working and the Tasmanians behind it.

  • Continue to build a genuine clean and green brand for our island home.

  • Increase our preparedness for the impact of natural disasters and economic shocks.

The Tasmanian Way acknowledges the stewardship of lutruwita by the traditional owners of our island home for more than 60,000 years and the need to embrace our past to shape our future.

Where did this come from?

The Tasmanian Way was initiated from a group of Tasmanians coming together with the same question: can we work together to shape our future? The answer to the question was a resounding ‘yes’.

The first Tasmanian Way Forum was held in September 2019 to initiate the process to co-create a state-wide plan to shape our food and waste systems for a circular economy in Tasmania and to position Tasmania as a global leader in the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Tasmanian Way is coordinated by Jessica Robbins, Founder and Director. If you are interested in supporting activities or getting involved email jessica@tasmanianway.org | https://www.jessicarobbins.com.au/.
